[Profile of Hiromi Taniguchi]
Born April 5, 1960 in Miyazaki Prefecture. At Kobayashi High School, he won consecutive high school relay races in 1977 and 1978. After enrolling at Nippon Sport Science University the following year, he joined Asahi Kasei. He then won his first marathon at the Beppu-Oita Marathon in 1985.
He won the Tokyo International Marathon and the London Marathon in 1987. At the Beijing International Marathon in 1988, he recorded a good time of 2 hours, 7 minutes, and 40 seconds, coming in second (the sixth fastest time in Japan's history). At the 1991 World Championships in Athletics, he became the first Japanese to win a gold medal. The following year, at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, he fell but still came in eighth. He became a hot topic for his refreshing expression and his comment "I fell" after the race.
